Henson, Herbert Hensley

Henson, Herbert Hensley
(1863–1947)
   Bishop and Popular Theologian.
Henson was educated at the University of Oxford. After ordination, he served as a parish priest and hospital chaplain. He was appointed Dean of Durham in 1912, Bishop of Hereford in 1918 and Bishop of Durham in 1939. He was liberal in his views and his consecration as Bishop was questioned; Henson was forced to retract his early radical views on the virgin birth and the gospel miracles. ln his early writings, he strongly believed that the Church of England should be an all-embracing national Church, but after Parliament rejected the revised Prayer Book, he became an advocate of disestablishment. His books aroused much interest in their time and included The National Church (1908), Anglicanism (1921), Disestablishment (1929), Christian Morality (1936) and The Church of England (1939).
